So the tech guy just left.
Said there were a few things that could be wrong.
Most likely it's something to do with my upstream being too high?
There's apparently some kind of controller on the poles that controls your upstream, because if it gets too high, it's bad for your modem; causing lots of signal loss.
So they're sending a technician for that in a few days.

He also said that my router is too close to my cable modem, which is what this post is about.
My Linksys apparently was transmitting on the same channel that my cable modem receives it's signal on, so there was too much interference.
So I changed my broadcasting channel to a way different one.
But now, he said I have to move my router 7-25 ft from my cable modem which requires a fuck ton of rewiring for me since I use the RJ-45 cable for my comp and the modem/router is in a different room.
If any of you network type guys can confirm this, I'll get to it.
But I wanted to see if this even made any sense before setting out on this project.
I like all my cables nice and tidy, so I nail them to the wall near the floor moulding or door frames.
I'd basically have to rip everything out, move furniture, and nail it back into place.

Nah, all that matters in the length/quality of the cable connecting your modem and router. No longer than 25ft, no shorter than 10ft. They can be right on top of each other if you wanted.

He's insane. But the upstream signal part is accurate. Hes not talking about bandwidth - as the signal is split more and more (new houses coming in, etc) techs install more and more amplifiers to boost the signal coming into your property. Each amplifier needs to be installed to amp it up by a specific frequency. Too low and your upstream saturated your downstream - too high and the reverse happens.

The problem is that the signal is modified every time the line going from that pole is modified - they need to be periodically adjusted. It's a big mess.

I am surprised that the tech couldn't do this while he was there though...

He said it was outsourced to a different company that handles all the lines.

As for length/quality of the cable, that's not what he's talking about.
He had this device he plugged the coaxial cable into instead of my modem.
He showed me this test that was sending/receiving packets.
It would show something about Corrected/Uncorrected errors.
With the router plugged in, I was getting a crazy amount of errors.
With the router powered off, it was a clean slate.
Then he moved the router like across the room and plugged it back in; still clean slate.
He brought it back to the modem and it went ape shit again with the errors.

I don't see how the location of where your router and modem would affect anything for example what about the Combo router/modem?
